These batiks were new about 100 years ago. Now they are antiques, and perhaps one of them is in the Macan Tidur Textiles collection. Who knows?

This photo from Jakarta dates from the beginning of the 20th century. The text at the top reads: "We offer Java style belangkon (headcloths) and pre-tied, ready-to-wear ones." The text at the bottom reads: "We await your order at Radja Plaat shop." Prices and the address are also indicated.

We like headcloths ourselves, and have collected many. The square format oriented around a blank centre makes them look mesmerising when mounted and displayed. We are currently preparing an online exhibition of headcloths, and will also show them in our new gallery in Seminyak later this year. Stay tuned.
