| Macan Tidur/Sumaru Sourcing in March Architectural Digest |
|
The Hawaii home of Cassandra Hazen, which appeared in the March issue of Architectural Digest, is filled with custom masterpiece furniture, antiques and accessories from Macan Tidur and its sourcing branch, Sumaru. Hazen fell in love with Bali long ago, and has been avidly collecting antiques from Indonesia for years. When she and her husband built their vacation home on the Kona Coast, they turned to interior designer, Douglas Durkin to integrate Cassandra's finds with further acquisitions and bespoke furniture which Durkin sourced with Macan Tidur/Sumaru Sourcing in Bali. See the complete AD article here. During Durkin's visit to Bali, Susi Johnston and her team ushered him around the island to scout out fine antiques and artefacts for the Hazens' home, while providing a wealth of cultural information to put the pieces in context and give them more meaning for the owners. Durkin discussed furniture plans for the home with Susi and her craftsmen, and began designing a complete range of custom pieces for the Hazens. After his trip, Durkin's office in San Francisco kept in constant contact with Macan Tidur during design development and production of the furniture. All of it was produced by hand using reclaimed teak from demolished buildings, and many pieces incorporated carved elements derived from traditional Indonesian decorative motifs. The results are spectacular, and would have been impossible without the constant cross-global and cross-cultural communication between Douglas Durkin Design and Macan Tidur.
While their furniture was in production, the Hazens and Durkin did some "virtual shopping" with Macan Tidur for additional antiques and accessories to round out the interiors. This was made possible by Durkin Design's innovative online database, which allows sources like Macan Tidur to upload images and information for consideration, which are then presented to Durkin's clients in San Francisco, or indeed, wherever in the world they might happen to be. |
